Couch mite
Aceria cynodoniensis
Short, crowded shoots can be a clue in couch turf.
What to look for
- Shortened spaces between leaves on couch shoots.
- Tightly crowded, broom-like growth rather than normal runners.
- Affected areas can yellow or thin as shoot growth is distorted.
Confirm it before you treat it
Couch mites are microscopic and shelter beneath leaf sheaths. Compare distorted shoots with healthy runners, then seek magnified identification. Spider mites typically stipple leaves and may make webs; they are a different pest group. Herbicide injury and mowing stress can also distort growth.
What to do next
- Confirm couch or a couch hybrid and examine new distorted shoots.
- Maintain adequate moisture and balanced nutrition. Extra nitrogen is not a blanket mite remedy; research has found greater broom formation under some high-nitrogen and low-irrigation conditions.
- Clean affected clippings from equipment and discuss a suitable labelled application plan with Turfmate.
Conditions matter more than dates.
Growing couch and developing mite populations are the watch points. Distorted shoots should be investigated early rather than allowed to spread unnoticed.
Warm-season couch growth is a useful monitoring window. Northern lawns can remain active for more of the year.
Can I see couch mites with the naked eye?
Usually not clearly enough for reliable identification. Distorted shoots are a clue; magnified inspection helps confirm the cause.
