Lawn Solutions Oxafert herbicide and fertiliser, 3 kg bag
Seasonal weed prevention

Oxafert · 3kg or 20kg

Pre-emergent herbicide and fertiliser for buffalo and kikuyu when both weed prevention and nutrition are needed. Apply before the target weeds germinate, following the label on your pack.

A 3kg bag covers 100 m² at the 3kg summer-grass rate. The winter-grass rate is 4kg per 100 m². Account for its fertiliser in the program. Do not use on Santa Ana, newly seeded turf, putting greens, low-cut tees or bowling greens.

Bow & Arrow · 500mL

A selective liquid treatment for existing, actively growing broadleaf weeds listed on the label, including clover, bindii and creeping oxalis.

At 50mL per 100 m², a 500mL bottle provides enough product for 1,000 m² total treatment area. Product used per 100 m²: $5.50. Sprayer extra.

This is broadleaf weed treatment; Oxafert is the prevention option above. Test a small area on buffalo first, especially older ST varieties. Kikuyu may temporarily discolour. Check the label for full directions and restrictions.

A little know-how goes a long way

Handy lawn tips.

Practical how-to guides for your patch. Measure your lawn, work out product quantities and check your watering before you start the next job.

How to measure your lawn size
Start with Turfmate’s lawn map.

Find your address and outline each lawn area to get an estimate in square metres.

Measure my lawn

Knowing your lawn area helps you compare pack coverage, plan feeding and explain your patch when asking for advice. You will need a tape measure or measuring wheel, paper and a calculator. Record measurements in metres.

  1. Sketch your patch. Draw each lawn area separately. Mark garden beds, paths, paving and other areas you will not treat.
  2. Split it into simple shapes. Divide an L-shaped lawn into two rectangles. Use triangles for angled edges. Keep the shapes separate so you do not count the same area twice.
  3. Measure and calculate. A rectangle is length × width. A triangle is base × perpendicular height ÷ 2. A circle is 3.14 × radius × radius; the radius is half the diameter. All results are in square metres (m²).
  4. Allow for curved edges. For an irregular strip, divide it into short sections, measure the width at both ends of each section, then multiply the average width by the section length. Add the sections together. Smaller sections give a closer estimate.
  5. Subtract the non-lawn areas. Remove beds and paths only if they were included in your shape measurements. Add the remaining lawn areas together.
  6. Save the result. Keep front, back and side lawn totals separately, plus the overall total. Note different grass types or areas you treat differently.

A worked example

Front lawn: 8 m × 5 m = 40 m².
Back lawn: 10 m × 6 m = 60 m², less a 2 m × 3 m garden bed = 54 m².
Side triangle: 4 m × 3 m ÷ 2 = 6 m².
Total lawn: 40 + 54 + 6 = 100 m².

Using an online map? Trace the lawn boundary rather than the whole property. Check the image is current and verify unclear edges on the ground. Treat the map result as an estimate, especially around trees, narrow strips and new landscaping.

Common traps: using the property size as the lawn size, mixing centimetres with metres, counting overlapping shapes, or subtracting a garden bed twice. Recheck uncertain measurements before calculating a treatment quantity.

How to work out product quantities
Let My Lawn Mate do the sums.

Enter your lawn area and the current label rate to calculate product quantities, packs and your product budget.

Calculate product quantities

Start with the area you will actually treat. Confirm the product is suitable for your grass and the job, then use the current label rate and directions. A pack size is not an application rate.

  1. Find the rate and its units. The label may state grams per square metre, kilograms per 100 m² or millilitres per 100 m². Keep the calculation in those units.
  2. Scale to your area. For a rate per 100 m², divide your lawn area by 100, then multiply by the label quantity. For a rate per m², multiply directly by the area.
  3. Measure the product. Weigh granules or measure liquid with suitable equipment. Follow label instructions for equipment, dilution, application and watering.
  4. Compare pack coverage. Divide the usable pack quantity by the quantity needed for one application. Buying a larger pack does not mean applying more.

Calculation example

If a suitable product's label rate were 2 kg per 100 m², a 150 m² lawn would need 150 ÷ 100 × 2 = 3 kg. This is a maths example, not a recommended rate for any product.

Liquid product and water are different quantities. Calculate the product amount from the label rate. The label and calibrated equipment determine the carrier water needed to cover that area. Do not assume one tank equals one lawn or use extra concentrate to compensate for poor coverage.

If the label gives a range, requires calibration or uses units you are unsure about, send us the product name, grass type and measured lawn area before applying.

How to check your watering setup and coverage
Plan your watering with My Lawn Mate.

Use your lawn area, chosen weekly target and rainfall to work out litres and sprinkler run time.

Calculate watering needs

A brown patch is a reason to investigate. Compare a healthy area with the affected area before increasing watering.

  1. Check the layout. Note lawn shape, hose reach and the areas each sprinkler or soaker covers. Look for leaks, blocked outlets, overspray onto paths and missed edges.
  2. Check available flow. Time how long the intended tap takes to fill a container of known volume. Litres per minute = container litres × 60 ÷ seconds. For example, 10 litres in 30 seconds is 20 L/min. This measures flow, not pressure; compare both with the equipment requirements.
  3. Compare coverage. Where water falls from above, place identical, straight-sided catch containers around the lawn, including near edges. Run the setup for a recorded time and compare the depth collected. Large differences suggest uneven coverage. Keep containers clear of sprinkler heads and repeat after correcting faults.
  4. Check beneath the grass. After watering, examine small soil samples in healthy and stressed areas at a similar depth. Note whether the root zone is moist, dry or persistently wet. Surface dampness alone does not show how well water has penetrated.
  5. Adjust to conditions. Take rainfall, soil, grass type and season into account. Observe runoff and drainage. Follow your local water restrictions and seek advice if patches remain dry or wet despite reasonable coverage.

New turf and seed need an establishment plan suited to the site. Ask for that guidance separately rather than copying an established lawn's watering routine.

How to take useful lawn photos and ask for help

A few clear photos and the right details help your mate in turf understand what has changed.

  1. Show the whole area. Take a wide photo showing the pattern of damage, nearby shade, paths and watering layout.
  2. Show the edge of the problem. Photograph where healthy and affected grass meet, then take a sharp close-up of the leaf, weed or insect. Include a ruler for scale where useful.
  3. Add your lawn details. Tell us your grass variety if known, suburb or region, measured area, when it started, recent weather, watering and mowing habits.
  4. Tell us what has already been applied. Include product names, dates and quantities. Explain what you want to improve and whether the problem is spreading.

Photos are a starting point. Similar symptoms can have different causes, and some problems need a closer inspection or a sample.
