What to look for

  • An arc or circle of stronger green growth.
  • A ring of stressed or dead grass may accompany water-repellent soil.
  • Mushrooms can appear, but are not present in every case.

Confirm it before you treat it

A mushroom after rain does not automatically mean damaging fairy ring. Compare moisture inside, outside and on the ring, inspect roots and record whether the same arc returns. Rings caused by other turf diseases need different management.

What to do next

  1. Map the ring and check whether water is penetrating the affected root zone.
  2. Discuss drainage, thatch and soil management before committing to a treatment.
  3. Reduce underlying stress and maintain even soil moisture. Do not assume every ring needs a fungicide.
Seasonal watch

Conditions matter more than dates.

Symptoms depend on the fungus and soil response. Dry soil can make a water-repellent ring more obvious; mushrooms may appear after moisture returns.

Inspect whenever rings appear. Warm-season soil drying and changes in rainfall or irrigation are useful prompts, rather than fixed outbreak months.

Will removing the mushrooms remove the ring?

No. The visible mushrooms are only part of the fungus. Management depends on what is happening in the turf and soil.
